What Is the Spotted Lanternfly?

First reported in Pennsylvania in 2014, this invasive planthopper is native to Asia. It has quickly spread throughout the Northeastern USA, where it can threaten ecosystems, agriculture, and home landscapes. The pests feed by puncturing the bark of plants and sucking sap, which can weaken trees and leave them susceptible to disease and dieback.

  • Eggs: Laid in the fall on trees, firewood, furniture, and vehicle surfaces. Egg masses are grey and mud-like. One female can produce 30 to 50 eggs.
  • Nymphs: Spring hatching; undergo four stages (instars); increasingly destructive with each stage. Nymphs leap but don’t fly, and they eat the soft parts of stems and leaves.
  • Adults: Late summer to early fall are active. They have unique gray wings with black spots, and brilliant red hindwings. They gather in large clusters and exude a sweet substance (honeydew) that is attractive to other pests, as well as leads to black sooty mold.

Since they could hitch a ride on vehicles and outdoor gear, they rapidly spread through neighborhoods. Immediate and sustained action is necessary to prevent damage and spread.

Why They Can Be a Menace to Your Landscape

Lanternflies don’t bite or sting, but they do some serious damage to plants and the great outdoors. These vermin generate unsightly sticky conditions that discourage the use of outdoor space. Then, they can overwhelm patios, decks, and gardens, preventing homeowners from enjoying the outdoors. They are also a menace to fruit trees, grapevines, and other edible vines as they can destroy crops with their feeding patterns. When left alone, these unwanted and unsightly growths can rapidly turn a picturesque scene into an ugly, mouldy embarrassment.

  • Weakened Trees and Shrubs: The constant feeding on the sap of trees removes essential nutrients, causing damage to the plants and rendering them vulnerable to other pests or fungal infections.
  • Messy Residue: Honeydew excreted when aphids feed coats everything underneath trees with a gross, sticky film. This decaying material is also an attractant for ants, wasps, and other pests.
  • Sooty Mold Growth: The sticky honeydew also becomes a breeding ground for a black mould which can coat leaves, turf, and surfaces under affected trees, smothering other plants by shutting out light.
  • Rapid Reproduction and Spread: A handful of missed egg masses can easily turn into several hundred adult lanternflies. In established infestations, they are expensive and difficult to control.

Protecting your investment early is cost-effective and protects the health and aesthetics of your outdoor environment.

  • Egg Mass Scraping & Removal: During the autumn and winter, we examine trees, fencing, or other hard surfaces to scrape and relocate egg masses to a safe location so as not to increase hatchings.
  • Nymph & Adult Control: We spray live stages where they hide and have specific insecticides for selective, eco-friendly control.
  • Systemic Tree Injections & Soil Treatments: Deep treatments safeguard valuable trees as protection is applied directly through the roots.
  • Install Sticky Band Traps: We put up screened traps around trees that kill both the nymph and the adult, but don’t take out birds or pollinators along for the ride.
  • Preventive Treatments: Timed treatments in early spring and late summer to prevent population increase before it is out of control.
  • Same-Day Emergency Service: Rapid response when infestations are discovered unexpectedly.
  • IPM (Integrated Pest Management): We develop and implement year-round control programs using seasonally appropriate monitoring, treatment rotations, and site-specific methodologies.

How Our Process Works

It’s not a one-time spray to deal with a spotted lanternfly infestation. Our time-tested approach is built on the premise of long-term protection that covers you with thorough planning, accurate implementation, and continued support. Here’s how we achieve the standard of exceptional quality for every property we manage:

  1. Property Inspection: We perform a meticulous visual inspection to search for hotspots, host trees, and egg sites. This allows us to assess the level of infestation.
  2. Custom Treatment Plan: We evaluate your options, type, and level of pest infestation to create an effective and non-invasive program.
  3. Targeted Application: From the hand-pick to the soil injection, all services are specifically selected for maximum effect without major interruption.
  4. Scheduled Monitoring: We return several times throughout the season to assess control efficacy, modify tactics, and look for new activity.
  5. Communication & Education: You’ll get updates in real time, as well as seasonal advice and documentation to learn about what we’re doing and why it works.

Seasonal Control Timeline

A new season is a chance to get ahead of any lanternfly activity before it goes into overdrive. We methodically work to best correspond with the life cycle of the pest, aiming our applications for when they are at their most vulnerable. Being proactive all year long is key to long-term control and to help safeguard your landscaping investment.

  • Spring (March to May): Egg mass removal, Albert pre-emergent spray for early nymphs
  • Summertime (June to August): Monitor and treat as needed 2nd to 4th instar nymphs, adults via spraying and traps
  • Fall (September to November): Remove Adult Spotted Lanternflies, Late Season Tree Injection, and Egg Mass Identification
  • Winter (Dec to Feb): Dormant season inspections, IPM planning, and education
