What Is the Spotted Lanternfly?

First reported in Pennsylvania in 2014, this invasive planthopper is native to Asia. It has quickly spread throughout the Northeastern USA, where it can threaten ecosystems, agriculture, and home landscapes. The pests feed by puncturing the bark of plants and sucking sap, which can weaken trees and leave them susceptible to disease and dieback.

Eggs: Laid in the fall on trees, firewood, furniture, and vehicle surfaces. Egg masses are grey and mud-like. One female can produce 30 to 50 eggs.
Nymphs: Spring hatching; undergo four stages (instars); increasingly destructive with each stage. Nymphs leap but don’t fly, and they eat the soft parts of stems and leaves.
Adults: Late summer to early fall are active. They have unique gray wings with black spots, and brilliant red hindwings. They gather in large clusters and exude a sweet substance (honeydew) that is attractive to other pests, as well as leads to black sooty mold.
